Sookie is a fine feline and she needs a new chapter in her life story because she is not too pleased with the one she is stuck in right now.
Sookie was left in a cardboard carrier in the middle of a cold December night on a doorstep. I have heard of fates worse for cats, but this one really hurt. Could the person not have taken her in to a shelter and told the staff more about her? Now we are left guessing.
Some things we do know: Sookie is scared right now, but her playful side comes out for a variety of toys (This post from February showed Sookie playing with a toy I made). And do not get her started with the laser pointer, unless you want to play for a while, of course.
Sookie is probably about 5-years-old. She was very unhappy in the first home we tried and she seemed afraid of the traffic sounds from the street. I have also seen that she does not enjoy the foot traffic on the street, so it appears she wants a quiet home with someone who knows how to relax and have fun doing it.
We also know that Sookie tolerates other pets that are not very interested in her. She is a live-and-let-live kind of girl, unless the other pet is too pushy or agressive. Then just fuggetaboutit.
If you want to learn more about Sookie, please email.
UPDATE: It is official that Sookie will go to her new home tomorrow. I am really happy for her and the new family because Sookie really deserves a good home. Here’s to second chances!

Rex is a seven-year-old African Gray Parrot. He travels around in a carrier (this is why the photo is grainy). I came across Rex while at a local coffee shop in Brooklyn. He made the most piercing sound while waiting in line, similar to my overly-sensitive smoke alarm at home. Rex was very interested in being photographed, but didn’t want to wait very long for an espresso.

I won this toy in a raffle and am most excited. I knew the dog would love it. I didn’t know just how fast she’d conquer it.
This video was taken on day two of having the toy.

Two days a year the New Jersey-area animal welfare and pet professionals convene to discuss the pet-related issues of the day. The conversations are dominated by people interested in the homeless dogs, cats, and little furries. But we all have a common goal to unite, learn, and share the things we’ve done to really make a difference for pets.

Some of the discussion topics were how to:
I met some lovely people and heard some great ideas. I am inspired. I already posted onto Craigslist about our cats for adoption and started a Facebook page for the rescue group.
I also updated photos of pets on Petfinder and started a Meetup group for people who want to use Petfinder in the best possible ways.
And the best part of all: I won a Nina Ottosson game for the dog in a raffle! I posted about her puzzle toys as soon as I saw them and now I have one! And she loves it. Video to come shortly.

I will be attending the Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey annual conference in New Brunswick this weekend as a representative of The Artemis Project. Know anyone that is attending? I am looking forward to hearing what other people are doing for pets in our area. Will report back to you next week.

A certain veterinarian I know has a real soft spot for Brian from Family Guy. He recalls every Brian joke to me with a laugh whenever I run into him. And I laugh too because I also really enjoy Brian’s antics. Even if he is the character we anthropomorphize the most, Brian still manages to find dead birds, have separation anxiety, and go trash diving. How do you feel about Brian and his jokes? You can see more of him on Hulu, Adult Swim, or even join his Facebook page.
