This Saturday, June 3rd, enter the park at 99th St. and 5th Avenue and meet in the East Meadow at 9:30 AM with pooch in tow.
This 2006 Dog Walk will benefit the Mayor’s Alliance, Animal Care & Control (NYC city shelter system) and the ASPCA.
Expect a huge crowd. Expect some awesome dogs and some that will beg you to take them home with you.
The course will be 1/2 mile so dogs of all sizes and ages can participate.
It is likely you’ll have to walk your dog Saturday morning anyway, so why not walk for a cause?
For Details, visit the ASPCA website.

Event: “Dog Day at Shea” and the “Met your Pet” contest

Categories: NYC Event, Spot's Sports

This Tuesday, May 30th at 7:10 pm, you can take your dog out to the ballgame.
Since last year went well, and the dogs held out for that 7th inning stretch, they are welcome back for a second year.
You can try out for Stupid Pet Tricks on Letterman at the game, or just buy some food and keep the old boy entertained since he’d rather watch you eat than watch the game.
Dog tickets are $5 (proceeds go to North Shore Animal League) and Human tickets are $26.

If your pet cannot sit still long enough for an inning, let alone the whole game, then keep her home and dress her up in Met gear for the Met Your Pet photo competition. You could win free Mets tickets and your dog could become famous. Unless she is a Yankee’s fan, then she’d just be embarassed.

Featured Friend: Pet Stop

Pets on the Upper West Side are lucky to have places like Pet Stop.
Yes, we are talking about a pet supply store, but this is worth exploring.
On the Pet Stop website, you can learn about local pet-related legislation, sign up for their neighborhood newsletter and order items online (but then again, Max wouldn’t get to pursue the vast array of tempting snacks).
Best of all, Pet Stop hosts cat adoptions on the weekends and has the best selection of foods that we’ve seen in NYC. For their community outreach and good neighborhood feel, we recommend Pet Stop.

Are You Prepared?

…For an emergency?

An important issue that we should give a little more attention to is disaster preparedness. Since the onslaught of hurricanes last year, many positive steps have been taken for disaster planning for pets. One good measure is the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2005—current status: passed by the House and pending in the Senate

Here in NYC, the MTA will officially allow dogs (leashed and muzzled) on the trains and buses (only in the event of an emergency). (More at Gothamist)

Even the AARP is addressing the issue and stating that we consider our pets as a part of the family that should be cared for during emergencies.

NYCityPets recommends that you read this pamphlet “Disaster Preparedness for Animals in New York City” from the Mayor’s Office. (Link to PDF)
-They provide a list of items to have on hand for emergencies and they spell it out that you shouldn’t plan on taking shelter in any city evacuation centers if you bring your pets with you since they won’t be allowed inside.

The bottom line: do not leave your animals behind.

NYCityPets recently came across the phrase Dedicated Parkies in a Harlem Parks Newsletter (PDF).
Does a certain, special dog inspire you to be a Parkie?
The parks department is looking for photo submissions of dogs at play in the NYC dog runs for the exhibition, Unleashed. Find out where to email or mail your photos to Frances Sheridan Here. Hurry up, the showing will start on June 1st!

In the meantime, check out Frances Sheridan’s earlier dog run work in This Book.
