Henry Bergh was the founder of the ASPCA here in NYC. He will be honored today in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn as the ASPCA celebrates its 140 year anniversary.
Today, dogs and cats will be marching through the cemetery to Bergh’s gravesite. Our condolences to anyone who is attending a funeral there today. Maybe this celebration will lighten the hearts of some who aren’t expecting to see this parade of kitties and doggies.
It has been 168 years since pets (guest animals as the cemetery is calling them) have been allowed inside. If you are going to check this out, please call Arielle Greenberg at (212) 876-7700, ext 4653 because they require registration first as there is a limit on invited pet guests today.
You can also view the exhibition, “Blessed are the Merciful: Celebrating Henry Bergh and the A.S.P.C.A.”, now through Memorial Day. To get to Greenwood Cemetery, take the R or M (weekdays only) to 25th St. at 5th Avenue.
