(or download a version of the petition here to pass around at work or in your neighborhood)
Support the responsible people who take their dogs off-leash in the parks only when they’ve been given the courtesy hours to do so.
The dogs need you now, more than ever.

One day, NYC could be compared to other fine cities like Toronto, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver with their pet-friendly transportation opportunities….
Currently, you can bring small pets in carriers onto most trains, buses, and cabs. You can even pay Pet Taxi or Pet Chauffeur to give your pet a ride.

The one thing you cannot do…legally…is take a leashed dog onto the MTA trains or buses.

In honor of this law-breakin’ Husky dog, and all the other dogs that wouldn’t exactly squish into a carrier, we support this petition to allow dogs onto city subways. (Of course, we are not referring to dogs that ride the train solo. Nor would we allow the people who don’t clean up after dogs that mistake the train for the bathroom.)
via email:
I’ve started a petition to allow medium/large dogs on the train (the
dogs that don’t fit into carriers). It’s called NYC - Let Me Get On
That Train. There are some suggestions for regulations including
taking the Canine Good Citizen test to be allowed to ride. For more
info please go to:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/384046888You can view and sign the petition on that site.
Thanks for your support!
Thanks, Amanda Soto, for starting this petition!

The Juniper Park Civic Association (JPCA) in Queens is continuing the effort to end off-leash recreation in NYC. There will be another court date on August 29th to examine the “courtesy hours” from 9 pm to 9 am that give dog owners privileges to run dogs off-leash in parks without designated off-leash dog runs.
NYCityPets covered this issue earlier, but things are far from cut and dry with both sides of the debate publicly crying out for support.
Dog-owner groups need your support now more than ever, since the end of the 9-9 courtesy hours could bring about the end of off-leash space in dog runs eventually. It is not surprising to us that the JPCA doesn’t support the construction of a fenced, designated off-leash space for the park patrons any more than they support off-leash in the park proper.
Please send your thoughts on this issue to your councilmembers and pledge support to NYCDog.
If your fury isn’t fueled by our words, read this new blog that paints the picture of dogs doing more harm than good. How can that blog be called Prospect Park Advocate? We see no support there for a large portion of the park users!
We think those photos of the dog beach look fun, but we’re guessing that blogger doesn’t appreciate our furry friends.

New Yorkers for Parks, the “…only independent watchdog for all the City’s parks, beaches and playgrounds,” just launched a new blog: The Dirt.
Since our furry friends are frequent park users, NYCityPets is sure pet-related issues will be hot topics. They’ve already covered the controversy over off-leash hours in some parks. We’ll be watching.

FW: The Brooklyn Animal Foster Network needs your help!
The Brooklyn Animal Foster Network has several cats, kittens, puppies, and dogs (including a pure-bred American Bulldog) who need foster homes until an adoptive family can be found. All of these animals were scheduled for euthanasia tomorrow, but have been put on a 48-hour hold so that foster homes could be found. Please go to brooklynanimalfosternetwork.org to find out more about how you might save the life of an animal (foster home applications can be found on the site and are down loaded by staff as soon as they are submitted on line).
(Note: Although the forwards we receive are sometimes out of date, this is an ongoing call for help)

The Brooklyn Record reports on the Stray Pride Benefit for the Brooklyn Animal Foster Network:
Sunday’s oppressive heat did not dampen the spirits of volunteers and participants at the Brooklyn Animal Foster Network’s Stray Pride benefit and BBQ. Many adorable and loving dogs and cats made their debut to participants and those passing by, all up for adoption or fostering. Ginger’s Bar on 5th Avenue generously provided space for the event, the proceeds of which all went toward the medical and transportation costs of the animals. Those interested in pet adoption or participating in the Brooklyn Animal Foster Network’s fostering program should visit their website or call 718-789-6865 for more information.
