Having recently helped rescue some kittens begotten by our local deli cat, bodega cats are clearly close to our hearts. We look forward to following the Bodega cats series by Clinton Hill Blog, which started today with Sancocho.
a “sancocho”, in case you were wondering, is a meat-heavy stew that is the national dish of the dominican republic. the bodega owner’s daughter told me that her dad likes to name their cats after food. works for me! (in my family we gave all our cats names that started with the letter m….) she calls him “ocho” for short, and says that he has a loyal following among their customers, some of whom have even brought him presents.

I just came across this link. How fast we forget. The owners quoted here sold the bodega, and threw Sancocho in with the deal. The current owners, after the City banned bodega cats, banished her (yes, HER) to the basement. When that didn’t work out, they released her to the street. She was rescued today (5/31/08) by a customer who remembered her in her glory days and taken to a vet, where she’s getting cleaned up and ready for a good home.
