Wilbert is one of the two shop dogs over at Fisch for the Hip, a consignment shop in Chelsea. Sorry we can’t show a photo of the other guy, we didn’t want to interupt his nap!

In 2007, this girl has taken up a new hobby: knitting. Yes, it will be slow in the beginning, but the plan is to finish a fabulous dog sweater before the weather is too warm for the old girl to wear it in style. A recent birthday present that came for this knitting newbie was Doggy Knits by Anna Tillman. So far, everything looks really difficult in the book. This will all change soon, hopefully.
While many sweaters are available on the racks of doggie boutiques, Target, Petco, and the like, it will probably be more rewarding to spend hours knitting than seconds swiping the credit card.
Along the same lines,
Knit-Whit and Splatgirl have started a knitalong that might interest you crafty people. They want you to join them by knitting a dog sweater. If you aren’t so craftacular, there may be a knitter out there that needs a dog model. (READ: new dog sweater for a small donation?) Check it out and offer your pooch if you want him to look cozy in a new turtleneck. The knitalong runs now through March 31st.
And if you chuckle at the idea of a dog in a sweater, please remember that some dogs really do need protective outerwear when the weather is downright nasty. Other dogs wear gear because they deserve the added comfort and protection while they do the tough jobs required of service dogs.
Okay, a turtleneck isn’t exactly “gear”, but at least it can be made at home by a novice knitter!

Who doesn’t love a fun piece of art on the wall with man’s best friend? While we have yet to find a good resource for artwork by some of the lesser known artists of the world (specifically, contemporary artists), the hunt for art we love leads to many websites by individual artists.
If you are into hound portraits, check out the artists reviewed at Urbanhound or Jodi Whitsell’s works (The Chihuahua is in our living room right now). Check out any of the works below for more about the artists. The first image is a logo for a group of artists who donate their proceeds directly to animal charities. How kind!

(All images are works for purchase, so if you like them…support the artists!)

Learn some moves on the dance floor, help animals in need, and the price is better than cover at a swanky club or broadway show. Seriously, go shake your moneymaker.

*Denise Flaim (writer for Newsday, still hunting for Vivi the whippet), gives a nice start to 2007 with A New Year’s Preamble.
*On the same subject, learn how to recognize a pet health emergency at MSNBC.
*The ASPCA is living up to the expectations of the animal-loving NYC community after recently hiring a forensic veterinarian and an investigator. We still want to see more investigation and prosecution of animal abandonment and abuse! This NY Sun article boasts a job well done by ASPCA.
*Oh, Slentrol. What can we say? To be honest, there have been a few deserving of Slentrol dogs who have crossed our path, but probably the only time it would be necessary to give this drug is upon adoption of a new, ahem, chunky dog who deserves a jump start on a diet. You can read what Wally, the corgador, has to say about this controversial new drug. Or you can talk with your own veterinarian…
*Sexy Beast: Canine Style Unleashed?
Say what you will about your Sexy Beast. Gary Bogue, pet blogger, finds this very strange, but someone out there is digging it. Especially if it smells like a freshly buried bone.

Meet Rhome. He is a frequent visitor, perhaps a mascot even, of ABC No Rio, an art collective on the Lower East Side. Here Rhome is checking out some art at a recent benefit sale.
