Winston von Ralph needs a home. A really good home. He was found in Brooklyn, just a bag of bones. He is now healthy, neutered, and less than a year old. The people who rescued him have a full ship. They have embarked on training him, but the voyage must continue as he still has that young dog enthusiasm we all love so much. Winston von Ralph is a cuddly guy and is eager to please. Email for contact information. Also, click the photos to see a little more of him on Flickr

A fantastic gift for a pet lover is a work of art that includes a beloved pet. Here is a list of local artists who will take your dog, cat, bird, office fish, or reptile perhaps, and subject them to immortalization:
Laurence Richardson at the PLP Gallery makes both pet and wildlife portraits with a sketchy, ethereal aesthetic. (497 St. Johns Place, Brooklyn, 646-234-0922)
Kate Williamson makes cartoonish, line drawn watercolor sketches of your pets. (917-566-1650)

Jodi Whitsell’s vibrant, fun paintings can be found in a few local veterinary offices.
A favorite in the West Village, Mimi Vang Olsen has done work for the Humane Society of NY and private works. (The Pet Portrait Painter at 545 Hudson Street , NYC, 212-675-5410)
Dan Nelken does some elegant photography in his Manhattan studio. (43 West 27th Street, #7R, NYC, 917-747-3384)
Delaney Ann McDonough has a charming portfolio of commissioned works in oil.
Etsy.com, a great source for finding local artists and handmade goods, lists a couple of local artists:
The only dog art gallery in NYC, the William Secord Gallery, has three fine artists who do works on commission.
And for a little surrealism in your pet portraits, you shouldn’t miss Rachelle Oatman. Seriously, check out this link to her NY dog. It is worth a look.

Penny is a one-of-a-kind dog. She is a rust-brown colored schipperke. Nearly all of the dogs of this breed are jet black in color, so this was a cool thing to see. Penny is a very sweet and polite dog on the street and a pleasure to meet.

Fiona had the same look on her face as many others at the too popular LES Pickle Day on Sunday. A word of advice to the picklers: extend your fest a lot longer than one single block! We love pickles, but we need room in which to eat them.

Are you thinking about switching your dog’s diet? If you are considering preparing dog food yourself, a necessary resource is the book Home Prepared Dog & Cat Diets: The Healthful Alternative by Donald R. Strombeck, DVM, PhD. Strombeck specializes in gastroenterology and has been a veterinarian for over 40 years. You get over 200 recipes, some of which are formulated for the management of specific diseases (ie. kidney disease, obesity control, heart disease). It is dangerous to feed a home cooked diet to your pets without the proper guidance of a nutrition expert, so this book should be a welcome addition to your veterinary library.
If you are hard pressed for time, but want to try local, home made dog foods here is a list of companies to check out:
Scooter Food
FreshPet and their Homestyle Select Food
Zen Chien
The Healthy Pet Gourmet
Trudy’s Homemade Dog Food
Chicken and turkey recipe image from Trudy’s website. Mmm, palatable.

The image here came from The Book of Dogs by James Gilchrist Lawson, published in 1935. Notice in the text it says that dog fighting was out of style 72 years ago. I challenge you to make a positive change for all of the bully breed/mixed breed dogs. Call them Yankee Terriers. Why do we call them Pit Bulls when we don’t want them in the pits? Get into the spirit of being proud of all the good bully dogs you know and call them Yankee Terriers. Change the name, and you might just see the bad reputation disappear.
