Are you thinking about switching your dog’s diet? If you are considering preparing dog food yourself, a necessary resource is the book Home Prepared Dog & Cat Diets: The Healthful Alternative by Donald R. Strombeck, DVM, PhD. Strombeck specializes in gastroenterology and has been a veterinarian for over 40 years. You get over 200 recipes, some of which are formulated for the management of specific diseases (ie. kidney disease, obesity control, heart disease). It is dangerous to feed a home cooked diet to your pets without the proper guidance of a nutrition expert, so this book should be a welcome addition to your veterinary library.
If you are hard pressed for time, but want to try local, home made dog foods here is a list of companies to check out:
Scooter Food
FreshPet and their Homestyle Select Food
Zen Chien
The Healthy Pet Gourmet
Trudy’s Homemade Dog Food

Cool I been looking for a good recipe book for dogs, Thanks. I recently also have started to use Homestyle Select. It’s definately a highly recommanded dog food for those not interested spending the hours cooking.
I’ve been feeding Trudy’s Homemade for months. My dogs absolutely love it, they’ve never looked better and it’s delivered fresh when I need it.
I got a sample of Trudy’s Homemade at “Broadway Barks.” My 4 year old schnauzer, Schmidt, has been treated (at great expense) for allergies since he was a puppy. I gave it a try. After just three weeks his skin cleared up and we’re off meds! Good stuff!!!
Great food made with heart and passion! Little Prince loves it. Thanks for all you do.

My dog Rocky loves Trudy’s Homemade! He is a Shih Tzu who had black tear stains and stomach problems since a got him from the public shelter. I changed his commercial food for Trudy’s Homemade over five months ago, and he has been doing great since then. No more tear stains and no more vomiting.
Jr and Rocky.
Trudy’s Homemade: I never thought I’d be so particular I’d feed a pet homemade food but I do and I’m glad. The convenience can’t be beat. Delivered to your door just like Fresh Direct. Order 10 or whatever and it’s as good as fresh when unfrozen. My Toy Poodle snarfles it down so no problem there. No more tear stains. And I’ll bet it’s more nutritious than my diet.
