The Good, the Bad, and the Furry

GoodBadFurry.jpgHave you read the book “the Good, the Bad, and the Furry“? This survey of dog breeds, written by Sam Stall, is full of fact, humor, and realistic advice about common traits of dogs. Just read for yourself a section of the entry for Scottish Terrier:

Headaches and Hassles: Scotties love to dig, so don’t leave one alone in your backyard unless you’d like it to install a root cellar. They also require professional grooming. Because this breed is quite active, it relishes regular walks. A sedentary Scottie is a bored Scottie. And a bored Scottie may amuse itself by taste-testing interior furnishings….

This book keeps you interested in learning about every breed, even the ones you could never imagine having in your home. Stall gives rational advice on everything, from energy level and disposition to physical traits and genetic health problems. The truth about whether a dog will or will not fit into your lifestyle is the basic premise of “The Good, the Bad, and the Furry”.

Be sure to get this book for *anyone* you know who is interested in bringing a new dog home. ‘Tis the season when people consider adding to their furry families. Do your homework first, you’ll be glad you did.

(*If you know several people who need to learn more about dog breed traits before they choose a new dog, Amazon is selling this book in packs of 8 copies. Perfect gifts for your dog’s friends?)

Porkchop and ApplesauceMeet two delicious kitten sisters known as Porkchop and Applesauce. These little tigers are looking for a home. They were found stray in a backyard with their mom, who has since gone home to live with their rescuer.
Because they have had a lot of friends to teach them why people are so great, Porkchop and Applesauce are very well socialized. These girls love other cats and playing together. They are as sweet as pie and really love to be cuddled.
Do you have room for another helping of fun after Thanksgiving? Email to learn more about our Porkchop and Applesauce.

Ooh La La: International Travel for Pets

Pet Travel DogMost people have no intention of traveling abroad with their pets. In NYC, we have a population of jet-setting people who like to bring along their pets where ever they go.
Whether you are traveling just a hop-skip over to Canada, or moving to France for the next two years, here are a few tips to get your pet on the plane and onto the next adventure.

  • You should expect to pay for a few things, such as a veterinary check-up, crate, pet airline ticket, and a pet passport.
  • Microchips are mandatory in just about every country you want to visit with your pet. This is doubly important in island countries where the government may be very strict on your pet due to their rabies-free status (the US is not rabies-free, so your pet is a suspect to them).

We’re Sorry (well, maybe not Honey)

Honey's PleaDear Readers,
Many thanks to you for keeping an eye on NYCityPets.
This has been an eventful season for pets here in the city. Sadly, we have not been around to tell you all about it! I’ve been playing catch-up in other parts of life: getting married, attending funerals, meeting new babies, and taking on more responsibility at work. Honey has been busy too: playing fetch with the Squeaky, getting her first dental cleaning and tooth extraction, keeping up with vermin in and out of the house, and enjoying time with the dog walkers!

I hope that I can bring you a new page design and a lot more pet news soon, but we are going to take it one day at a time around here.

So for this week, I am going to get back into telling you what we (Honey the spaniel and I, and sometimes Scott) see and hear about pets in NYC by starting with a couple of topics that hit very close to home: international travel for pets, cat adoptions, and as always, more pet stories.

Sincerely,
Lizz and Honey
