City Pet: Rex

Rex Rex is a seven-year-old African Gray Parrot. He travels around in a carrier (this is why the photo is grainy). I came across Rex while at a local coffee shop in Brooklyn. He made the most piercing sound while waiting in line, similar to my overly-sensitive smoke alarm at home. Rex was very interested in being photographed, but didn’t want to wait very long for an espresso.

I won this toy in a raffle and am most excited. I knew the dog would love it. I didn’t know just how fast she’d conquer it.
This video was taken on day two of having the toy.

AWFNJ Thoughts

AWFNJ ConferenceTwo days a year the New Jersey-area animal welfare and pet professionals convene to discuss the pet-related issues of the day. The conversations are dominated by people interested in the homeless dogs, cats, and little furries. But we all have a common goal to unite, learn, and share the things we’ve done to really make a difference for pets.

AWFNJ Conference

Some of the discussion topics were how to:

  • start a foster care program
  • best manage an animal shelter staff
  • socialize feral kittens
  • make the best possible match between adopter and pet
  • use social networking tools to promote pets
  • I met some lovely people and heard some great ideas. I am inspired. I already posted onto Craigslist about our cats for adoption and started a Facebook page for the rescue group.
I also updated photos of pets on Petfinder and started a Meetup group for people who want to use Petfinder in the best possible ways.

And the best part of all: I won a Nina Ottosson game for the dog in a raffle! I posted about her puzzle toys as soon as I saw them and now I have one! And she loves it. Video to come shortly.

No, there is no iphone for pets. But there are pets for the iPhone and other, possibly more helpful, apps that you might be interested in trying if you have the phone. Here are a few I found interesting. Do you know of any useful or purely fun pet apps?

Off Leash (Free) by The Casual Game Network: a dog park locator

Pet Owner’s Manual ($1.99) by Phantom Particle: both a veterinarian locator (using GPS to find a vet nearest to you) and a medical reference to help you determine how best to care for your pet in an emergency

Pet CV ($4.99) by Goce Petrovski: helps you keep all the information you need about your pet in one easy place
Always forget when you gave heartworm pills? Trying to stay on a medication regiment or keep track of weight changes? You can keep all of the information here as well as ID numbers and pet-related contacts such as trainers, vets, and pet stores.

Pet notebook ($2.99) by BarnacleJive Software: a nice and tidy way to keep information on your pets in one place, accessible on your phone
Go to your veterinarian with your questions right on your phone, record vaccinations, license and microchip numbers and other important info.

iPet Photo(Free), iPet Photo Pro ($0.99), and iPet Attention ($0.99) by Andrew Weekes:
makes sounds to intrigue your pet and bring out that photogenic side of your cats and dogs

iPet Pets (Free) by Webworks and Applications: virtual pets to love and care for if you don’t want to dive in to more of a pet ownership commitment.

Bark Machine & Dog Tricks (Free for a limited time) by Robert Maran and Deidra Jones: a trainer’s best friend with pictures and instructions on how to train your dog to do a variety of fun tricks plus a Bark Machine to help keep your dog’s attention

Quad Camera ($1.99) by Takayuki Fukatsu: Captures four images on a single screen and is great for capturing pets in play mode

Dog Whistler (Free) by Mobeezio: an app that will whistle at any frequencey from 8,000 to 22,000 Hz

Dog A Log ($0.99) by inwa.com.au: breed information reference guide with photos

Proverbial Cat ($0.99) by Zap Bang Done: for a witty cat saying when you need it

Dog Years (Free) by Charles Treece: get your dog’s age and your own age in dog years so you can compare who is older, and by default wiser

Cat Toy ($0.99) by tnxbai: if your cat already makes your phone into a toy, maybe this app is for you

AWFNJ Conference logoI will be attending the Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey annual conference in New Brunswick this weekend as a representative of The Artemis Project. Know anyone that is attending? I am looking forward to hearing what other people are doing for pets in our area. Will report back to you next week.

Do the Brian jokes work for you?

Jett loves Brian A certain veterinarian I know has a real soft spot for Brian from Family Guy. He recalls every Brian joke to me with a laugh whenever I run into him. And I laugh too because I also really enjoy Brian’s antics. Even if he is the character we anthropomorphize the most, Brian still manages to find dead birds, have separation anxiety, and go trash diving. How do you feel about Brian and his jokes? You can see more of him on Hulu, Adult Swim, or even join his Facebook page.

Begger Here’s what I’m reading lately:

  • Ed the cat was rescued by a whole office staff. Thanks to the people at Echoing Green, Ed was removed from a car engine and given a new chance for a happy home. “Social Change Starts Here” could not be a better slogan for those people. They already posted a video of Ed on Facebook.

  • There is a new Meetup.com group for dogs and their people in Astoria.
  • Have you heard of Pickleball? It is a sport named after a family dog who would steal the ball during play. Want to learn more? Join the new Pickleball meetup.
  • The word is that prices have been “nibbled” down at Brooklyn Bunny. Go get yourself some lettuce room spray!
  • The people in some NYC dog run groups are discussing umbrellas for the upcoming rainy spring/sunny summer seasons, the issues with professional walkers bringing large groups of dogs into the runs, and concerns over dog aggression and how to handle problem situations. If you are interested in getting involved in your local dog run community, check with NYCDog for a list of groups. Your active involvement in the community groups will help keep the dog runs healthy.
  • Petfinder.com has a section of pet training videos and now hosts videos of adoptable pets. They help you find pets and, more importantly, keep them and help them learn good manners. If you are interested in helping homeless cats, Petfinder has posted webinars on helping cats in shelters and on the streets. You may need to register to view, but it will be worth it.
  • On Dogster, there is a memorial blanket contest going on until Monday the 23rd sponsored by Peternity. To enter, visit leave a comment on the Dogster Dogblog.
  • And over at Design Sponge, there is a plethora of fun and fabulous pet goods for under $100.
  • As you can see, my dog is begging for some playtime. That is all until tomorrow.

Just Say No (to Chicken Bones)

Random Chicken Bones on NYC StreetAt least once a week, if not more, I am battling the chicken bone epidemic on the streets of NYC. I kick them to the curb every chance I get. Anything to keep them away from my ravenous dog. If you have ever walked a dog in this city, this comes as no new story. I have seen people chucking the bones onto the street on a rare occasion. It is also possible that the city wildlife (pigeons, ferals, and rats) are the culprits too. So it seems I will never win battle chicken bone. But I’ll keep fighting. I’ll keep kicking them under cars.

If you think I am blowing this out of proportion, check out Ms. Heather’s Chicken Bone Cavalcade or Lulu or these other ones.
