SFTH.gifStray from the Heart is a rescue organization based on the Upper West Side in Manhattan.
You can read their blog here. Or you can talk to Beth and other dedicated volunteers on any given weekend evening outside of the West 68th Street Loews movie theater. They are probably at Loews right now telling people about the plight of the homeless animals in NYC.

B'Easy One of the dogs currently with SFTH is a hound mix (that we completely fell in love with) named B’Easy. He hails from the N’Orleans area and has come to NYC to get a fresh start.

Tiger Another of SFTH’s dogs is Tiger, the mastiff, chow/shepherd mix. We came upon Tiger in Central Park a few weeks ago while on an afternoon stroll. Tiger has his own running partner, a woman from Europe who wants a dog, but she lives in a not-dog-friendly building.
Did Tiger realize he is a celebrity because we recognized him from the SFTH webpage? Probably not, since he’d rather walk in the park than surf the web!

Lady Face
via an email from Josh:

Animal Lovers–
Lady is a 5-year-old Rottweiler bitch currently living in New York City. Her owner intends to move to Europe at the end of the month–at which point he plans to destroy her! Apparently he doesn’t even want to pay to have a vet do it, but just plans to take her out to the country and kill her himself. He is making no other arrangements for the dog, but is okay with someone else finding her a new home. This is where a friend and I have stepped in.
Lady is a little shy, but quickly warms to new people and loves to go on walks. She’s relatively small for a Rottweiler–only about 55-60 pounds. She’s sadly gotten used to life in a small city apartment, but a little more room and daily walks would certainly bring joy to her life (and yours!)

I don’t know how Lady reacts to other pets or small children, so I wouldn’t recommend her for a home with either (though she might be just fine). She’s perfectly heathy as far as I know, but she would need a checkup and updated innoculations. I checked with Eastside Veterinary Clinic and found out that the checkup and routine rabies shot she needs together cost about $55. I don’t know yet whether or not Lady has been spayed.
If you are interested in Lady or know someone who might be, please send an email.
Hopefully with a little networking this dog can be saved!

NYCityPets Contest: Blockbuster Cat

Posted by Lizz on 08/05/2006
Categories: Adopt Me, Curious Cats

We here at NYCityPets are involved in many ways with pets. We petsit, volunteer for homeless pets, work with pets professionally, care for our own pets and we blog about pets. In short, we love pets and understand that situations arise where people need help to find another loving home for their beloved pets.

This love of pets is why we hate the man we have named New York City’s own Biggest Coward of the Day.
Biggest Coward

Thanks to his actions today, we are announcing the Blockbuster Cat Contest.

Blockbuster Cat Contest

But first, the back story:

This man is moving from NYC in less than one week. Today he was unable to find a home for his cat after his only only efforts were to try his local pet store and a random nearby veterinary hospital to see what options were available. After he received a list of all the NYC shelters and rescue groups and some email contact information, the man said: “I don’t believe in computers. None of these shelters are near here either.”
He left in frustration and went into the nearby Blockbuster Video store. He then set the cat cage on the floor, opened it and walked out of the store.

To us, he is now known as the Biggest Coward of New York City for August 4th, 2006.

Our Blockbuster Cat Contest is as follows: If you are in NYC and are looking to adopt a calm, sweet cat that deserves much more than to be abandoned, then email NYCityPets. We will provide free cat sitting for a year should you need to leave this cat for vacations or business travel. We’ll also give you a new carrier and bestow upon you the honor of Hero of the Day of New York City.

Brooklyn Monsoon Kitties

News FLASH Flood! Nine Brooklyn Monsoon kittens rescued!

June 2006

Six-week-old kittens found living behind steel doors, under a soggy, leaky cardboard roof (very a la Greenpoint), with limited eating-out options and lack of human love! Seeking warm housing with proper kitten food instead of catching Brooklyn worms, since they are 5 inches long and scary.

View pix: Here

Interests and activities include: Lots of mewing, chowing down, creating one-of-a-kind-cat-hair-covered slippers, and kneading and reading your palm (Prediction: you will be an ecstatic kitten parent!)

They had weepy eyes due to being outdoors but all went to the vet to receive eye ointment and have almost made a full recovery already! Moms tested negative for FELV/FIV and the vet said they’re very healthy! Have been treated with Advantage and are flea-free.

(If you are interested in these kittens, please email the Cat-Lady-in-Training).

The Mayor’s Alliance for Animals hosted another adoption event this past Sunday in Queens. Kittens and puppies took over a little piece of Astoria Park and the number of visitors was encouraging to those who kicked off the event.Adoption Event: QueensIMG_3741

The next Adoption Event will take place on Sunday, June 25th in the Bronx near Van Cortlandt House Museum.

Adopt Me! Clementine

ClementineHere is Clementine, my chair warmer at work. Clementine and I sit together all day and I can tell you that she is a snuggler. She is catty and bratty, her coat is spiked to convey her feisty nature. This cat just wants a warm, soft chair and a lap for snuggling belonging to a cat-savvy person. She does not want to play with toys or people. She just wants a dose of daily love and a safe, warm place. She’s not so trusting right now, but in the right home she’ll do just fine. I’ve been told that a female orange tabby cat is rare. So if our rarity, Clem, sounds like a match for you, send me an email.
