Buttercup’s place is tucked away in Brooklyn on 5th Ave. and St. Marks Ave. in a cozy corner shop.
Betty and Scott have made this shop a fixture in the neighborhood and a fun destination for New York dog lovers.
The Pawtisserie website has an online shop and a list of stores that carry Buttercup’s signature treats. You can find a variety dog foods at the shop and all of the treats are made with no preservatives.
They care about what goes into your dog, just like you do.
As a friend puts it, Buttercup’s is a treat to visit and although the snacks are decorated more for us than for our dogs, we still love it! With ice cream-shaped snacks and birthday bone cakes, we get just what she’s talking about.

Kya’s Collars are fun and perfect for that beer connoisseur or playful dog you know and love. We met up with Heidi on the street in Soho and she says many of her customers are tourists. Maybe you have a local dog that would look great in one of her collars? Check out her online shop or find her booth on a warm day in Soho!

Stray from the Heart is a rescue organization based on the Upper West Side in Manhattan.
You can read their blog here. Or you can talk to Beth and other dedicated volunteers on any given weekend evening outside of the West 68th Street Loews movie theater. They are probably at Loews right now telling people about the plight of the homeless animals in NYC.
One of the dogs currently with SFTH is a hound mix (that we completely fell in love with) named B’Easy. He hails from the N’Orleans area and has come to NYC to get a fresh start.
Another of SFTH’s dogs is Tiger, the mastiff, chow/shepherd mix. We came upon Tiger in Central Park a few weeks ago while on an afternoon stroll. Tiger has his own running partner, a woman from Europe who wants a dog, but she lives in a not-dog-friendly building.
Did Tiger realize he is a celebrity because we recognized him from the SFTH webpage? Probably not, since he’d rather walk in the park than surf the web!

Pets on the Upper West Side are lucky to have places like Pet Stop.
Yes, we are talking about a pet supply store, but this is worth exploring.
On the Pet Stop website, you can learn about local pet-related legislation, sign up for their neighborhood newsletter and order items online (but then again, Max wouldn’t get to pursue the vast array of tempting snacks).
Best of all, Pet Stop hosts cat adoptions on the weekends and has the best selection of foods that we’ve seen in NYC. For their community outreach and good neighborhood feel, we recommend Pet Stop.

Rational Animal is an NYC media organization. Susan Brandt founded this all-volunteer organization in 2002. They create promotional campaigns that help people understand the problems animals face today. Past projects include:
• Television commercials to promote spay/neuter
• Trails to Tails Map-the animal adoption map of NYC (includes dog parks too!)
• A video for the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals to show the cultural change to No-Kill shelters.
• Gingerbread Homes for Animals annual holiday event
• Orange ribbon awareness campaign for homeless animals
NYCityPets helped out during the Gingerbread Homes event last December in Central Park. We think that Rational Animal does great work, so check them out.
