NYCACC Ad: Shelter Animals Didn't Do AnythingSummertime has been more than just vacations and hot weather for NYC pets.

There is a new ad campaign for the Center for Animal Care & Control that really tells it like it is: homeless pets aren’t at fault for being shelter dogs.

In Manhattan, the Pet Fashion Week took place in August. Pups strutting their stuff in designer fashions. It might be time to rename the cat walk. Jen at Gotham Unleashed has your photo highlights.
There have been reports of poisonings at the Chelsea Waterside Dog Park. Hopefully, everyone is doing fine now and park goers are being more watchful.
Oh, and you’ll love this photo of Cimbi (of Harlem Fur fame) enjoying summer in Central Park.

HazelIn Brooklyn, there has been a kennel cough outbreak.
At Hillside Dog Run, the community is working together to help a friend in need get the veterinary care he deserves and the Elegant Stinkhorn mushroom has returned to the dog run. Gracie (the lost Italian Greyhound) was reunited with her family after a lot of media coverage and a nearly 4 week search. Hazel(see photo) was voted Brooklyn Industries Top Dog. Congrats to you, Hazel!

On the subway, an ad promoting epilepsy awareness contains a furry friend. Although the intention of the ad is probably to show service dogs for people who have seizures, many epileptic dogs live long, happy lives too.

In local blogs:
Craftzine has a nice pattern for knitting a cat bed. You’ll know the bed is a success if your cat sleeps in it instead of your own bed.

Epilepsy PosterApartment Therapy gives a nod to the International Gift Fair that happened in August with a post about the Pet Project. They make modern furniture for your design-conscious pet.

Swissmiss shows you it is possible to craft your own dachshund with the Egg Press pillow kit.

Denise Flaim at Animal House has a few tricks up her sleeve when it comes to dogs. Canned pumpkin for constipation or diarrhea is something veterinarians inform dog owners about every day.

German Shepherd graphicAnd on a sad note, this graphic from the NY CACC website resembles the scene today on West 68th Street when a German Shepherd was left tied up to a street sign in the afternoon. Some resourceful, dog-loving people came to her aide and she is currently being fostered until a new home can be found. Why, oh why, isn’t there a real organization that prosecutes people who abandon animals? Aren’t there enough cameras on us in NYC that these heartless lawbreakers can be identified and sent to trial?

Duke The savvy people at Dogster’s blog know the importance of taking care of senior dogs. Get annual bloodwork done with wellness exams to stay in the know.

At Animal House, there is talk about breaking up dog fights and the auction at Christie’s that is ending tomorrow is all about dogs.

Gothamist covered dogs and cats recently. The allotment of space for small dogs vs. big dogs in the UES dog run coming to 63rd Street is being debated. Meanwhile, this family of kitties living in a Brooklyn backyard are in need of a home.

You can’t find any more doggy puns anywhere than in the Gizmodo post about a fat counter for dogs now available in Japan.

Over at Apartment Therapy, three eye catching, modern goods for pets were posted:
cat scratch squares, the GO! doggie crate, and the swirl cat scratcher (seen in the slideshow at Avery & Courtney’s home).

Take Your Dog to Work Day is coming up this Friday, June 22nd. Make sure your dog is invited back to work with these tips from Lifehacker.

The Mayor’s Alliance for New York City’s Animals is saving lives. Just as they set out to do. While the job will never be done, progress is good and we congratulate them.

Now that it is official, we’ll send you over to the Dog Politics blog for their take on Rudy Giuliani for Prez.

Speaking of politics, at the NY State Legislature website, you can find all of the 22 new bills introduced into the State Assembly this season. (Click on link and search “dog” or “pet”)

2007 Dogs of the Run Calendar

Hunting *Denise Flaim (writer for Newsday, still hunting for Vivi the whippet), gives a nice start to 2007 with A New Year’s Preamble.
*On the same subject, learn how to recognize a pet health emergency at MSNBC.
*The ASPCA is living up to the expectations of the animal-loving NYC community after recently hiring a forensic veterinarian and an investigator. We still want to see more investigation and prosecution of animal abandonment and abuse! This NY Sun article boasts a job well done by ASPCA.
*Oh, Slentrol. What can we say? To be honest, there have been a few deserving of Slentrol dogs who have crossed our path, but probably the only time it would be necessary to give this drug is upon adoption of a new, ahem, chunky dog who deserves a jump start on a diet. You can read what Wally, the corgador, has to say about this controversial new drug. Or you can talk with your own veterinarian…

Taxi BedThe quintessential NYC dog bed!

Annie’s Pooch Porch wouldn’t fit into our apartment, but it would work for one of those Central Park East/West/South/North apartments.

Parrots: Sweet music to your ears or just another kind of barking dog?

Gothamist covered the Cat Show at Madison Square Garden. Thoughts from a friend: “It was not like a dog show at all because all judges look every cat and each cat could receive a variety of different colored ribbons.” Sounds as complicated as cats!

255239139_e8298a1bbb_s.jpgFinally, here is what could happen if you don’t scoop the poop! Miss Heather could make your dog (droppings) famous. (Ed. note: please scoop the poop!)

Are Pigs the New Dogs?

Gowanus Lounge writes about sitings of a pig being walked on a leash in Park Slope.

In any case, we noticed on the Park Slope Forum that people are discussing a pig that has been spotted being walked down Seventh Avenue on a leash. The first report was posted on Monday and there have been a number of follow ups. Does this mean that Park Slope has its own pet pig? Or is it Emmett, the somewhat famous Fort Greene pig, about whom much has been written?

We wonder, are pigs the new dogs in Brooklyn?

AT LogoAt ApartmentTherapy.com, July was pet month. (Oops, sorry we missed it! We are still catching up on our reading!). AT listed adoptable pets from Petfinder all through July.

Postmodern PetsThey had a Pet Decor contest, and they told us about Petholica-the NYC pet newsletter and Postmodern Pets-a shop “for design-savvy pets and their people”.

Gothamist LogoOn Gothamist: The Animal Care & Control audit is a little depressing, but we can attest that here in NYC people are conscious of the issue and are working to do a better job for the animals.

Our Kittenpile was mentioned at Gothamist this month and there is a post about finding a good veterinarian in the city that includes some helpful comments.

On Flickr, Darvey the Pom has a cute tribute page. (Thanks to Atlantisa7 for the photo!):

Jon, from San Francisco, blogs about all the dogs he sees tied outside in the city. We aren’t thrilled about the idea, as we think it is scary to leave a dog alone out on a sidewalk.

If you think tick-borne diseases only affect dogs, think again: bobcat’s disease recently killed this Oklahoma cat.

The indispensable NYC dog-lover’s resource urbanhound has gone tri-coastal with new sites serving San Francisco and Chicago. When NYCityPets moved to NYC, we found urbanhound’s list and description of dog runs to be particularly useful in determining where to live. Now our left- and third-coast friends can enjoy the well maintained directory.
