AWFNJ Thoughts

AWFNJ ConferenceTwo days a year the New Jersey-area animal welfare and pet professionals convene to discuss the pet-related issues of the day. The conversations are dominated by people interested in the homeless dogs, cats, and little furries. But we all have a common goal to unite, learn, and share the things we’ve done to really make a difference for pets.

AWFNJ Conference

Some of the discussion topics were how to:

  • start a foster care program
  • best manage an animal shelter staff
  • socialize feral kittens
  • make the best possible match between adopter and pet
  • use social networking tools to promote pets
  • I met some lovely people and heard some great ideas. I am inspired. I already posted onto Craigslist about our cats for adoption and started a Facebook page for the rescue group.
I also updated photos of pets on Petfinder and started a Meetup group for people who want to use Petfinder in the best possible ways.

And the best part of all: I won a Nina Ottosson game for the dog in a raffle! I posted about her puzzle toys as soon as I saw them and now I have one! And she loves it. Video to come shortly.

    Missing: Maizie

This poster might be a little old, and I am hoping she already made it home, but you never know.
Maizie went missing from around the Prospect Park Parade Grounds on February 18th. If you know her whereabouts, email missingdog@catonavenue.com or call one of the numbers on the poster.
Oh, and forgive my photoshop job here. I don’t recommend walking a dog and trying to photograph a poster wrapped around a pole with a phone camera.

I Love NYC Pets posterWho loves NYC pets? The New York Stock Exchange, of course.

Today the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals will be on Wall Street to ring the closing bell at 3:50 pm. Mayor’s Alliance President Jane Hoffman will be there with a couple of adoptable dogs and Maddie’s Fund representatives to promote their annual I Love NYC Pets public awareness campaign.

Many adoption events are planned for this month. Several will take place on Valentine’s Day (a Saturday). If you are looking for a new pet to share the love, visit the Alliance website for event location listings. There are some great pets just waiting for anyone who has room in their hearts and homes.

    Missing: Yenta

Lost Dog: Yenta Yenta is a diabetic dog who is needs to find her way home. It is apparent from her photo that she has a microchip. (You see the yellow collar tag? That is from a Home Again Microchip). This means she will most likely find her way home if she is taken to a veterinarian and scanned or to an animal shelter. Hopefully her owners registered her microchip with their contact information….

Foster Home Needed for Matty the Cat

    Posted by Lizz on 08/29/2007
    Categories: Petfinding

Michelle is a kind soul for taking in an abandoned cat, however, she too needs a little help. Michelle is allergic to cats and needs a foster home for Matty. See her message below (sorry for the lack of a photo):

He’s named Matty. He is all white/blue eyes about 2-3 years old, 9 pounds, but very underweight. He was dumped at Amsterdam Houses about 5 months ago and was barely managing. Fortunately a kind woman was feeding him.

He’s getting neutered and all vaccinations today. Hopefully we’ll have
results of FIV/leukemia tests today, but may not be available until tomorrow morning. He was treated for fleas yesterday and has frontline on him and should be free of them now.

I’m allergic and get asthmatic and need immediate foster home–he gets
discharged from the vet later today. He also really seems to need a home with tlc!!

If you can help, email NYCityPets.
