Porkchop and ApplesauceMeet two delicious kitten sisters known as Porkchop and Applesauce. These little tigers are looking for a home. They were found stray in a backyard with their mom, who has since gone home to live with their rescuer.
Because they have had a lot of friends to teach them why people are so great, Porkchop and Applesauce are very well socialized. These girls love other cats and playing together. They are as sweet as pie and really love to be cuddled.
Do you have room for another helping of fun after Thanksgiving? Email to learn more about our Porkchop and Applesauce.

Ooh La La: International Travel for Pets

Pet Travel DogMost people have no intention of traveling abroad with their pets. In NYC, we have a population of jet-setting people who like to bring along their pets where ever they go.
Whether you are traveling just a hop-skip over to Canada, or moving to France for the next two years, here are a few tips to get your pet on the plane and onto the next adventure.

  • You should expect to pay for a few things, such as a veterinary check-up, crate, pet airline ticket, and a pet passport.
  • Microchips are mandatory in just about every country you want to visit with your pet. This is doubly important in island countries where the government may be very strict on your pet due to their rabies-free status (the US is not rabies-free, so your pet is a suspect to them).

We’re Sorry (well, maybe not Honey)

Honey's PleaDear Readers,
Many thanks to you for keeping an eye on NYCityPets.
This has been an eventful season for pets here in the city. Sadly, we have not been around to tell you all about it! I’ve been playing catch-up in other parts of life: getting married, attending funerals, meeting new babies, and taking on more responsibility at work. Honey has been busy too: playing fetch with the Squeaky, getting her first dental cleaning and tooth extraction, keeping up with vermin in and out of the house, and enjoying time with the dog walkers!

I hope that I can bring you a new page design and a lot more pet news soon, but we are going to take it one day at a time around here.

So for this week, I am going to get back into telling you what we (Honey the spaniel and I, and sometimes Scott) see and hear about pets in NYC by starting with a couple of topics that hit very close to home: international travel for pets, cat adoptions, and as always, more pet stories.

Sincerely,
Lizz and Honey

Winston von Ralph needs a home. A really good home. He was found in Brooklyn, just a bag of bones. He is now healthy, neutered, and less than a year old. The people who rescued him have a full ship. They have embarked on training him, but the voyage must continue as he still has that young dog enthusiasm we all love so much. Winston von Ralph is a cuddly guy and is eager to please. Email for contact information. Also, click the photos to see a little more of him on FlickrAugust 4, 2007 245(2) IMG_7757

Kate T WilliamsonPLP Gallery-PugA fantastic gift for a pet lover is a work of art that includes a beloved pet. Here is a list of local artists who will take your dog, cat, bird, office fish, or reptile perhaps, and subject them to immortalization:

Laurence Richardson at the PLP Gallery
makes both pet and wildlife portraits with a sketchy, ethereal aesthetic. (497 St. Johns Place, Brooklyn, 646-234-0922)

Kate Williamson makes cartoonish, line drawn watercolor sketches of your pets. (917-566-1650)

Mimi Vang Olsen-Steffy and Cally PostcardAlpha Portraits-E is for EllieJodi Whitsell’s vibrant, fun paintings can be found in a few local veterinary offices.

A favorite in the West Village, Mimi Vang Olsen has done work for the Humane Society of NY and private works. (The Pet Portrait Painter at 545 Hudson Street , NYC, 212-675-5410)

Dan Nelken does some elegant photography in his Manhattan studio. (43 West 27th Street, #7R, NYC, 917-747-3384)

Delaney Ann McDonough has a charming portfolio of commissioned works in oil.

Etsy.com, a great source for finding local artists and handmade goods, lists a couple of local artists:

The only dog art gallery in NYC, the William Secord Gallery, has three fine artists who do works on commission.

And for a little surrealism in your pet portraits, you shouldn’t miss Rachelle Oatman. Seriously, check out this link to her NY dog. It is worth a look.

Penny Penny is a one-of-a-kind dog. She is a rust-brown colored schipperke. Nearly all of the dogs of this breed are jet black in color, so this was a cool thing to see. Penny is a very sweet and polite dog on the street and a pleasure to meet.

FionaFiona had the same look on her face as many others at the too popular LES Pickle Day on Sunday. A word of advice to the picklers: extend your fest a lot longer than one single block! We love pickles, but we need room in which to eat them.
